Coming Out of the Broom Closet on Pagan Pride Day 2001

Los Angeles, Calif. (August 21, 2001) - Pagan Pride Day 2001 will be held on September 15, 2001 at Woodley Park in Van Nuys from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. People of all ages and spiritual backgrounds are welcome. The event will include information booths, vendors, entertainers, rituals, and other activities celebrating the Autumn Equinox, a time of thanksgiving in many Pagan traditions. An item of clothing or non-perishable food will be accepted as admission and donated to local charities.

The Pagan Pride Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to the elimination of prejudice and religious discrimination through education, activism, charity, and community. Annual Pagan Pride celebrations are held during the month of September. Over sixty cities participated in 2000 and this year there are 80 scheduled events in the United States, Canada, and abroad.

The food drive gives participants a way to share with those who are less fortunate while making a positive statement about Paganism. For decades Pagans have been wrongly accused of practicing devil-worship and performing "black magic." In reality most Pagans enjoy a religion emphasizing respect for nature, humanity, and oneself. Modern Paganism, or Neo-Paganism, is a growing religious movement based on combinations of ancient polytheism, modern eco-spirituality, and reverence for the Divine as both masculine and feminine.

Donations will be given to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, Beyond Shelter, and the Upward Bound House in Santa Monica. This event is sponsored by Pagan Pride Los Angeles, Inc. and area stores. Woodley Park is located at the intersection of Victory Blvd. and Woodley Ave. in Van Nuys.
